Turning 30…

Tony Griffin climbs the Mullaghmore to celebrate his 30th

I always thought 30 years of age was old. It s the age athletes get injured more often, actors get parts less often and if you are single…well you better get a move on.

Since I am none of the above, I was looking forward to turning 30 last Tuesday. In advance of the big day on the Sunday before we decided to mark the occasion by climbing  a mountain. In reality it ended up being a large “hill” called Mullaghmore in the Burren in Co Clare, Ireland. The Burren is an amazing place where history and the spirituality of the land are all around you. For example, one of the burial sites in the Burren called Pol na Bron is older than the Pyramids.

Me, being quite a bit younger than the Pyramids we took on the three hour climb on one of the most glorious days of the year so far. Family, friends, loved ones and that feeling of accomplishment when you get back to the start and look over your should at the mountain and say “Wow”.

Afterwards we retired to a small pub called Cassidys where the owners Michelle and Robert had a big fire burning, hot soup, home-made scones and the tastiest muffins probably ever made.

Ah yes, bring on 40, I stand ready.
